Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
